In order to equip its personnel with greater expertise in the legal framework of humanitarian work, Al-Sham Humanitarian Foundation conducted a course titled “Humanitarian Organizations Between the Duty to Comply with International Humanitarian Law and the Duty to Provide Humanitarian Assistance” to its staff working in the Turkish cities of Istanbul and Gaziantep.

The session was presented by Mr. Abd Rabbu bin Sahra, an expert in planning and international cooperation, who introduced the Foundation’s staff to International Humanitarian Law and its relationship with other laws. He presented the categories and properties protected by International Law and highlighted the concept of “safe areas” according to International Humanitarian Law.

During the two-day session, many discussions took place and proposals were made regarding the mechanisms for enforcing International Humanitarian Law and applying it to humanitarian work in Syria in order to protect personnel and their rights in case of any incident. The right of humanitarian initiative was also discussed along with introducing the most well known humanitarian organizations such as the Red Crescent and how they comply with International Humanitarian Law.
